In support of our recent article on Iron Supplements I have started an online poll to gather experience from people on what the best iron supplement is in their view.

Eating an iron-rich diet and taking a multivitamin with iron may prevent iron deficiency anemia, but it is usually not enough to treat the anemia once it has developed. The iron supplement is needed to eliminate any low iron symptoms you may be experiencing and boost your levels of stored iron and hemoglobin. Once you have your iron levels restored you should be able to stop taking the iron supplement as long as you eat Iron Rich Foods and maximize iron absorption.

Early studies on spinach suggested that the oxalates in spinach would act as iron absorption inhibitors. Quite a few people are aware of these studies as many articles on the internet highlight this issue with spinach. And just like most people I was initially fooled into thinking that spinach is therefore not an iron rich food.
Following any fad or extreme diet for anything more than just a few days is simply not good for you as these diest are nutritionally unbalanced and any weightloss you get is almost never sustained. Some of these fad diets can significantly increase your risk of developing one of the forms of anemia – or worse.

Clams | Another Iron Rich FoodWhen it comes to Iron Rich Foods, you can hardly do better than clams. Apart from an excellent source of iron clams are also a top source of potassium and Vitamin B12. They are unlikely to be contaminated, and according to the Environmental Defense Fund’s Seafood Selector, the farming of the most common clams in the U.S. does little ecological damage.
